Lecwec is only effective on rubber seals because it makes old hardened seals softer. The rear crankshaft seal is made of other materials.

Hello ,

Using 15w40 engine oil of a mineral type is good enough for this type of engine.Especially when you consuming engine oil. At the discount shop action you can buy 5 liters for 9,29 , home brand ""techno"".I have good experience with this oil on older engines , and have the right specifications. ,The trade mark/brand is not important, the specs are important.Bad oil is not for sale anymore that time is going..

I had some succes with this supplement; www.deolieconcurrent.nl/products/LecWec-...iEAQYASABEgLaKfD_BwE used on different oil systems like hydraulics on forklift trucks and steering system of a peugeot. On a engine i see a bit better result., but no guarantee of course its only a emergency solution.

But again , to change the cranckshaft seals by new is the right solution. Im not experienced with dealer/garage s , and theire prices of labour on engines . Dont forget that you pay in the netherlands around 80 euros a hour for labour ,and 20 % tax .A crankshaft seal is not that much ,think about 20,- at least .

Try to visit one of the specialists wich are experienced with these vans.. check pech lijst for example....under tap vereniging .

Hello again friends,

Here is a small update, followed by a couple of questions (of course)

We ended up bringing our 508 to Garage Verdervervoer in Utrecht. (Hello to them if they happen to read this post)

They have looked at our oil leak problems and came back to us with some suggestions.

I will only talk here about the rear crankshaft seal, as it is the one that is most complicated to deal with. According to the mechanic:

1) Replacing the rear crankshaft seal is only possible for one half ring, not both.
2) Replacing just one half might not solve the problem.
3) Replacing just one half would still cost ~700 euros.
4) Based on the above, and because the leak is not very severe, he suggests it is not worth the effort / expenses. Instead he offers to install a container to catch the oil spilled.

After that, we have done our best to read everything on this forum regarding crankshaft seals. However, since things our in Dutch, we have had to rely on Google Translate, so I would like to still clarify a couple of things.

a) Replacing both half rings requires taking out the whole engine. Correct?
b) Replacing only bottom half ring is more simple, is it normal to still be so expensive? (700 euros)
c) If we understand correctly, clutch plate could get wet from the oil leakage, leading to other problems. I guess this is a risk we take if we just put a container to collect the oil spill?
d) Do you recommend 15W40 mineral oil? It seems to have helped other members with oil leak problems.

As always, thanks for your time.

it seems that Wensink has given the price for a complete gasket set. Elring is a German firm and a OE supplier for MB.
But in general i have good experiences with the others as well.
The garages at the given adresses can get the parts just as well for you.
